Going through a divorce is an emotionally trying time.  The biggest thing you can do to make your divorce go as smoothly as possible is to retain the assistance of a professional, experienced in divorce in your state.

Divorces are never easy, but there are a few steps you can take to make the divorce process go as smoothly as possible from beginning to end.

Stay Positive.  This sounds easier than it is but if you can keep a positive outlook, knowing that eventually you will be able to get on with your life and move forward, you will feel better.

Collect all of your Financial Information.  Get together all of your bank statements, investment and retirement accounts; any paperwork pertaining to property that you own, vehicles, life insurance policies, and tax returns for the last three years.  Make copies so you have them after you give your attorney the originals.

Make an Inventory.  Create a list of all of your assets and debts.  In one column list your assets and their value.  In another column list your debts, mortgages, car payments, credit card balances etc.

Don’t be Rushed.  Take your time when it comes to the other side pushing you to decide what you want in the asset distribution phase of your divorce.

Stay Focused.  Remember, everyone that contemplates or goes through a divorce experiences moments of doubt.  Just stay focused and don’t let you emotions get the best of you and rule your decisions.

Get Support.  Seek the support of your friends and family.  There is no reason for you to go through this process alone.  Figure out which friends you have left that are yours.  It’s great to have someone to talk to during the tough times.

Pick your Battles.  Don’t fight your spouse on every little issue, the divorce process will drag out and it will just cost you additional lawyer fees. Try to set aside your emotions and think about what’s really most important to you.

Take the High Road.  Behave yourself.  Cooperate with your spouse on schedules for children.  Don’t do anything vindictive.  Become a “saint” in appearance.  You will be happier, more relaxed, and less damaging to your family.  It’s proven that the one who takes the “high road” always does better in a divorce.  Make no mistake, the Judge like to see a spouse take the “high road.”

Don’t Cave.  While you want to take the high road and not be the antagonist in this divorce story, you don’t want to be the pansy either.  Don’t cave in on something important just to avoid further conflict. You will regret it.

Be Realistic.  Despite your initial feelings to want to go after your spouse for everything, chances are the court won’t let you get away with it without unusual circumstances.  With this in mind, be realistic and practical when making your demands.  This will ensure a fair settlement and a quick divorce.

The divorce process can be long and arduous, but once the divorce is finalized, you will be free to explore all life has to offer. Consider this a time for following your dreams, making new friendships, and constructing the foundation for your new and improved life.
